Unturned California 2 Map Guide: Quests, Deadzone & Safezones

Last updated: May 2026 · California 2 release

Quick answer: California 2 (released 30 April 2026, six years in the making) is roughly 6x the size of the original California. It packs 100+ NPC quests across multiple safezones, multi-tier endgame Deadzone progression, a bespoke soundtrack, hidden secrets, and a fresh achievement set. Hosts on Plan L (16 players) or Plan XL (32+) due to the map's memory and CPU footprint.

Progression Path

Early game: pick a starting safezone

Drop into one of the NPC safezones (the in-game intro suggests one based on your spawn). Take the starter quests, scrape together baseline gear (clothing, basic firearm, melee), and learn the safezone layout. Each safezone has a trader for early loot rotation.

Mid game: chain quests across safezones

Quest givers cross-reference each other: a quest in safezone A often points to a target in safezone B. Travel becomes the rhythm. By mid game you should be at tier-2 firearms, vehicles, and a stash in your preferred safezone or a player-built base just outside.

Late game: enter the Deadzone

The Deadzone is gated by gear and group. Bring radiation gear, top-tier weapons, ammo, and ideally 2-4 players. Rewards scale per tier: deeper means rarer loot but more dangerous infected and tighter environmental pressure.

Server Admin Notes

Plan sizing

Group sizeRecommended planNotes
1-8 playersPlan M or LPlan M holds 8 players on California 2 with reduced zombie counts.
8-24 playersPlan LStandard community server config. Quest NPCs and Deadzone hold steady.
24+ playersPlan XLHeavy PvP / large communities. The Deadzone tier transitions are the biggest CPU hit.

Config snippets

Set the map in commands.dat:

map California2

Adjust zombie count for performance on 1k+ entity maps:

maxzombies 800

(The latest patch slightly improves perf for high-zombie maps; 800-1000 should hold steady on Plan L.)

What to back up

  • Player.dat per-character save - critical
  • Level.dat world state - quests in progress, safezone state
  • Bases / structures - stored in the map's chunk files

Schedule daily backups; the Deadzone progression is too long to lose.

Tips for Players

  • Read quest text. California 2 quest descriptions actually matter; they often hint at hidden locations or shortcuts.
  • Don't rush the Deadzone. Pre-Deadzone gear gets shredded. Aim for tier-2 firearms and at least one vehicle.
  • Coop the safezone hubs. Quest sharing is partial; doing safezone runs together compresses the timeline.
  • Check the soundtrack. The bespoke audio cues different zones; a music shift often signals a Deadzone tier transition.
  • Hidden locations. The map has a fair number of secrets and easter eggs. Some are quest-tied, others are pure exploration rewards.

Common Issues

Map doesn't appear in browser after update

Verify the map name in commands.dat is California2 (no space). If it's spelled California 2 or california_2 the server falls back to default and won't show as California 2 in the browser filter.

Server lags during Deadzone tier transitions

Deadzone tier swaps spawn a chunk of new zombie types. Lower maxzombies on smaller plans, or upgrade to Plan XL. The latest patch improves this but it remains the heaviest moment.

Quest NPC won't accept turn-in

Common cause: a Hanuberry Seed counter bug fixed in the latest patch. Update the server to the current Unturned version. If still broken, abandon and re-take the quest.
